Day 87 – Sacred Places

How do you feel about having an especially designated spot where you spend time with God? Perhaps you already have that?

I can say I certainly find it harder to connect with God in a deep level when I’m out of routine or not at home. I’ve had different places in different homes, my bed, a spot of the couch, a chair in my room… For me, I think it’s less about the actual place than the fact that I go there with my Bible and my notebook and the process of going there (perhaps with my tea) starts getting me in the right frame of mind. Having the special spot reminded what I was there for. I’m living in a temporary apartment at the moment, but usually I’ll have my key scriptures pinned nearby when I sit so I can meditate on them when my mind wanders. I’ve missed them over this summer.

I sat for a little while in a Catholic Church this past week and marvelled at the carvings, the paintings, the colours, the intricacies all around and I considered what an act of worship it probably was for the artists years ago to create such beauty. I couldn’t help but wonder at our awesome God when I thought about how much more beautiful he was than all I saw there.

I’d love to hear whether you have special places that help you contemplate God in all his splendour and majesty.

  1. Interesting thought about these building the Catholic Churches. Wonder what they really did think as they completed their work?
I went for a hike this weekend and while I don’t typically think of that as worship-I think it was. Getting to use my body and be out in nature was a special thing

    1. I think hiking can certainly be a “sacred space” especially when we’re the kind of person who experiences God through nature and creation. I love talking to God but be ocean or when walking. For me it can be a sacred time because I’m not doing anything else but doing that if you know what I mean—I can concentrate/meditate on God more easily.
