Day 33 – What Are You Created To Do?

I’ve had several conversations lately about callings. I’m certainly no authority on the topic, but one thing I’ve noticed is that the word itself seems to have a weight and a drama and even a pressure about it. Those who feel that they haven’t identified their calling seem to feel left out or somehow ‘less than’. Those who currently have (what we would call) a calling but feel led onwards or sideways can feel a pressure to remain, or even a confusion in their heart.

Annie F. Downs suggests in her devotional today that we should spend time with God and ask him. Of course, I heartily agree with that. But let’s not forget he already once told us a starting point: we are to love God and to love others (Matthew 22:37-39). While we must spend time with God, and the author today shares so well how we recognise voices we’re used to listening for, we can still practise our calling by practising loving God and loving others.

I’m praying for each of you to hear from God in some way personal to you. I’m also praying you courageously use your unique personality, resources and skills to love God well and to love whoever is near you. Pray the prayer the author suggests today. Spend time journaling or painting or doodling, all the time bringing your mind back to God when it wanders. Listen to music and worship God while you wait. He loves to feel you reach out to him. He is faithful. He is listening. He loves you.
