Day 32 – The Difference Between Dreams And Calling

Today’s devotional discusses a clear distinction between our dreams and our calling. I enjoyed her analogies of bank accounts and cooking ingredients! If calling is where our burden (for the world) and our talents collide, there’s no real limit to the ways our imaginations could express that calling.

Annie F. Downs writes, “You need to build your life around your calling, not your dreams. Your dreams will change over time. Some will come to pass, and some will pass away. But your calling will remain true.” She references Romans 11:29 as evidence our calling is irrevocable. What hope this gives us that we haven’t missed our chance or left it too late!

Our challenge today is to examine our dreams through the lens of our calling. Look where your talents and your burden for the world overlap and prayerfully consider which dreams could best display your calling in your current season.

  1. Both times I’ve gone through this devotional I’ve written I don’t know what my calling is. Any thoughts on helping to identify that? At the time I don’t really feel I have a passion burning for something, an area I want to go make a difference in.

    1. I think that’s a very honest response. I hope that in the next few weeks devotionals we’ll get more questions to help us reflect on that. I totally get how many of us often don’t have a passion for one specific thing. Are there times when you hear something in the news or read online that makes you feel more compassion than usual?
Heavenly Father, Sarah wants to serve you and seek you and show love to those you love. Reveal to her the ways you have already prepared and equipped her. Ignite in her heart passions for areas where you wish for her to show your love. Light her path, dear Lord.

  2. I think God tells me to make changes to my life so I can better see my calling. It’s not something I would have dreamed of. It’s a bit of a journey.

    1. I feel like God’s alright with journeys. Seems likes there’s an awful lot of them in the Bible. The most important thing is to keep drawing near to Him (just like you are doing) because he will protect you wherever you go.
