The story Annie F. Downs unpacks today (from Judges 6) tells of a young man called by God (audibly called it seems) whose first reaction was to explain why he wasn’t the right guy.
I don’t know what specifically inspired you to read this 100 day devotional, but I believe God knew you would. He knows how many days you will take to read it, and what you will get out of it. If you have something (even a tiny something) that you feel God may be asking you to do, I encourage you to look away from the mirror. Don’t tell God you’re not the right guy/gal. We may not have all the skills and resources, but our God does. Don’t hide, hoping God will not see you. Don’t think you have to do ‘something’ to get better first. Downs writes, “If you feel stuck looking at your own shortcomings, look upward to your Jesus, who is exactly who He says He is, who defeated death itself, and who empowers you to be brave.”
God does mighty things through regular people and flawed people and hesitant people: we are his preferred method of working stuff out in our world. The Bible is full of stories of people like you and me who God worked in and through, not because of who we believe we are but because of who God is.
I just listened to a podcast today that was very similar to these thoughts! The speaker was talking about Moses and his staff when God asked him, “what’s in your hand”? (Exodus 4:1-2) Moses was worried the people wouldn’t listen to him and God made an illustration out of a common object Moses already had. He didn’t go get something new, He didn’t change Moses’s perspective on the spot-He was able to use what was readily available. Just as Gideon felt he wasn’t called.
It was a good podcast if you have time to listen! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/12stone-church/id268809140?i=1000443963339
Thanks Sarah! I will ❤️
